Live Scan Frequently Asked Questions
  1. Who is affected? Anyone who will have prolonged contact with children on any AVYSL team.  This includes Coaches, Assistant Coaches, Team Trainers and Team Managers who request a season pass.
  2. What is a NEW Coach? If you are a team leader - coach, assistant coach, or trainer - and have not previously been fingerprinted for AVYSL, then you are considered a new coach.
  3. Why is AVYSL doing this?  This is just one more step in the process to ensure the Children are safe and are not exposed to anyone the league has deemed a risk or inappropriate to be with our kids.
  4. How much does it cost?  AVYSL pays the fee for the fingerprint service.
  5. What about Confidentiality?  The state has a very rigorous set of rules and laws that must be followed.  Only a select few AVYSL representatives have approval (by the DOJ) to see the results.  The results will not be shared, for any reason, with anyone who is not authorized by the DOJ.
  6. What if I already did a background check or Live Scan for another organization?  Due to confidentiality laws, other organizations are not permitted to share any information with AVYSL, nor can we share information with them.  Therefore, you must go through this process for AVYSL.
  7. What happens if I don’t want to submit to the background check?  You will not be approved by AVYSL to be a Coach, an Assistant Coach, or Team Trainer, or cannot receive a CYSA Adult Pass.
  8. Is my personal information secure?  The tools being used are owned and operated by the California DOJ.  These are protected using the latest security techniques, software and hardware tools, and are managed by the State of California.
  9. Who can I contact if I have questions?  Please send an email to the AVYSL  Registrar.  We can answer general questions about the program but cannot get into any detail about results or personal background information.
  10. How do I find out if I passed the Live Scan background check?  There will be no formal feedback as the results are protected by state and federal privacy laws.  If you did NOT ‘pass’, you simply will not be approved to coach by the league.  If you already have a current CYSA AdultPass and your background check results did not meet AVYSL requirements, your Adult Pass will be revoked by the league and you will be removed from your position with the team.
  11. Can I help out at practices without going through the fingerprint process? YES.  However, it is now a requirement that all Coaches, Assistant Coaches and Team Trainers go through the Live Scan process.  You can help with the players ONLY if an authorized Coach, Assistant Coach or Team Trainer is present.  At least one of these league-authorized people must be present whenever the players are present.  As a result, helping at practice will no longer count toward fulfilling your league volunteer obligation.
  12. Can I opt out of Fingerprinting? No, it is required by AVYSL that all new coaches get fingerprinted. If you fail to do so, your coaches application will be declined.
