Almaden Valley Youth Soccer League- Comp/Select Parents Workshop
Dear AVYSL Parent and / or Culture Keeper,
AVYSL is delighted to announce that it has formed a partnership with the Positive Coaching Alliance (PCA). This organization operates out of the Stanford University Athletics Department, and provides training on tools that coaches may use to give their players a positive youth sport experience. AVYSL is committed to implementing a culture of positive coaching throughout the league. To ensure success, all personnel are expected to adopt the culture that will be taught at a special workshop by a PCA trainer. As the parent of a player, your cooperation and influence is fundamental to the league’s plans to adopt this culture. You don’t want to miss this unique opportunity. Your coach has already probably attended AVYSL training in the techniques of Positive Coaching. Please join us for a Positive Coaching workshop where you will be the first parents at AVYSL to:
- Learn how to help your coach motivate young athletes to play better soccer
- Learn how to help players develop skills that will help them to be a better team member and contribute to their success both on and off the field
- Learn some new and state of the art skills and enjoy an interactive discussion with fellow parents / culture keepers and a facilitator with extensive coaching experience
- Learn how to work with coaches, players and league leaders to establish and maintain a positive competitive environment inside youth soccer
Keep checking for upcoming workshop to be held sometime the end of August or beginning of September.

What do I do if the team’s coach has asked me to be a “Culture Keeper”?
The role of culture keeper is a very important one at AVYSL. If you have made a commitment to the team to attend the workshop and be a culture keeper, your coach and team are relying on you to maintain the standards of Positive Coaching. You should definitely be at the workshop on tbd. There you will learn the fundamentals of Positive Coaching, and receive the simple materials essential for you to do your job.
What do I do if I’m a coach?
First of all, make sure that you yourself have attended the training for AVYSL coaches. Special PCA workshops for new coaches are being held on An essential component for the success of Positive coaching at AVYSL is the ability to get our player’s parents involved, and for them to understand the important principles of Positive Coaching. This will make your job as the coach so much easier and more enjoyable. You can concentrate on the kids in your team and enjoy being a coach even more. Therefore it is important that you as your team’s coach inform your player’s parents about the positive Coaching workshop that is being provided for them by AVYSL. At a minimum, AVYSL expects that each team will have 2 players parents appointed as “ Culture keepers” by the team coach. The “Culture keepers” will be your assistants on the sideline, and will make sure that all persons attending your AVYSL games and practices will follow the principles of positive coaching. You should carefully select and encourage at least 2 of your team’s parents to attend a Parents/ Culture Keepers PCA workshop, which Please encourage all of your team’s parents to attend, but make sure that at least 2 of the parents are accepting the responsibility of being the teams Culture Keepers, and get their commitment to attend the workshop and carry out their important role. Send e-mail and/or call each of your team’s parents, and tell them about this important initiative that the league is undertaking.
