In the next episode of our "More Than A Club" series, we take a look into Almaden Soccer Technical Director, John Devine.
We are approaching John's second anniversary here in Almaden. In that time the entire club has gone through a huge change on and off the field. From the introduction of our unique FC Bayern Affiliation and John's introduction to the club, the professionalism delivered on the field is second to none in northern California. John dedicates hours each day to support coaches from the competitive program to our volunteer coaches in our recreational program. Over a weekend he will watch anything between 8 to 12 games, this passion for work stemming from a steadfast belief in the club and the people striving for the growth and success in the short, medium and long term.
Originally from Dublin, Ireland, John left his family at the age of 14 to join London soccer power house Arsenal FC, joining fellow Irishmen David O'Leary, Liam Brady and Frank Stapleton to name a few in a golden Irish generation for Arsenal. Making over 100 appearances for Arsenal as well as playing for Stoke City and Norwich City respectively, John boasts cup final appearances at Wembley, European Cup medals and caps for the Republic of Ireland.
After playing John's growing passion for coaching took him to one of the biggest clubs and most successful youth systems in the world at Manchester United. Working as an Academy Director in Ireland for United John was tasked with scouting, recruiting and, using John's Guided Discovery program, preparing Ireland's best for a trip across the Irish sea to trial with Manchester United. Working under Sir Alex Ferguson and rubbing shoulders with the likes of Ryan Giggs, Roy Keane, David Beckham and many more John and his team helped provided Manchester United with a steady stream of young Irish talent including Robbie Brady, Anthony Stokes and Jeff Hendrick, Johnny Evans and Craig Cathcart, who are currently in World Cup qualifying action for the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland respectively.
In his work as Almaden Soccer & GPS FC Bayern Technical Director John supports the continued education of his coaching team as well as providing the club with a consistent style of play in a creative learning environment. It is from this work there is a building excitement for the future of this club and what it can achieve. When talking about Almaden Soccer's pending brand new facility at Pioneer High School John often struggles to hold back the excitement and regularly speaks of his enjoyment of working with his coaching staff and Director of Soccer Gordon Mackintosh.
